News Archive - July/August 2009Whitewater Development for Teesside A £4.9 MILLION redevelopment has been secured for the Tees Barrage International Whitewater Course with the aim of turning the site into a world-class facility. Funded through a partnership including, ONE north East, Stockton Council, Tees Active, Middlesbrough council and Sport England, it includes redesigning the main course, building a second shorter course and installing four large 12m long by 3m diameter Archimedes Screws to create guaranteed conditions for canoeists and rafters. When not used to pump water around the course, the pumps will use excess river water to generate electricity, helping the course to be sustainable in energy terms. Based on the north bank of the River Tees, the artificial whitewater course is located between Stockton and Middlesbrough. The facility offers Kayaking, Canoeing, Whitewater Slalom and Whitewater Rafting. Flat water or fast moving white water is available. « |
