Leisure Centre is First Stage in Urban Village Scheme

Leisure Centre is First Stage in Urban Village Scheme

SHEPHERD Construction has won a £14.9m contract to build Bilston Leisure Centre on behalf of Wolverhampton City Council.

The new build project will replace the existing leisure centre in Bilston and will be the first permanent building of the £175m urban village project, a 100-acre development that will create a new urban community including homes, employment opportunities, a primary and community care centre, a new Academy school, parkland and pedestrian boulevard to link with the town centre.

The 5,600 sqm facility, on vacant land off the Black Country Route, comprises an eight-lane, 25m swimming pool, learner pool, health and fitness suite, four squash courts, sports hall, cafe and meeting room. It is due for completion in May 2011.

The new Bilston Urban Village is one of the largest regeneration projects in the Black Country. Councillor Matt Holdcroft, cabinet member for Leisure and Culture at Wolverhampton City Council, said: “The sorts of facilities which will be on offer have been designed to attract families and other target groups, and it will make a significant contribution towards tackling health inequalities in the area.”
